Matt was appointed to the position in 2018 by President Donald J. Trump, who called him, “a very smart man and a very respected man.” Prior to his appointment, he had served as Chief of Staff for Jeff Sessions.

In 2004, President George W. Bush nominated Matt for UNITED STATES ATTORNEY FOR THE SOUTHERN DISTRICT OF IOWA. He was confirmed by the United States Senate and served in the role through 2009.

A native Iowan, Matt attended the University of Iowa where he earned his Bachelor of Arts in Communications, Masters in Business Administration, and Juris Doctor Degree.

In addition to his academic pursuits, Matt was also a gifted athlete. He played Tight End for the Iowa Hawkeyes football team, including a starting role in the 1991 Rose Bowl. Matt’s athletic achievements were further recognized when he was inducted into the Iowa High School Football Hall of Fame in 2009.

Matt’s career has included political leadership, private legal practice, and national media commentary. He is a gifted, dynamic speaker and we are excited to have him join us as we come together to support the Gaston County Republican Party.
